THE KISS OF JUDAS
THE BETRAYAL OF CHRIST
PART ONE: ON HERESIES
But Jesus said to him, "Judas, deliverest thou up the Son of Man with a kiss?" [Lk. 22:48]
LEFT: November 30, 1992, (the Phanar - Constantinople): Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and
Cardinal Edward Idris Cassidy, head of the Pontifical Council for
Inter-Christian Ecumenism, give the fraternal kiss during their concelebration on
the Patronal Feast of the Phanar. In his address to the Cardinal, Bartholomew
re-asserted his belief, also professed the previous January, in "the fundamental
ecclesiological truth" that Orthodoxy and Papism "constitute the two
lungs of the Body of Christ" [see The Orthodox Church (OCA),
February 1993, p. 6; and see Ekklesia, no. 1(January 1-15, 1993) p.
14.]
RIGHT: The same Cardinal Cassidy also shows 'solidarity' and 'oneness of spirit'
with the Jews by taking part in their synagogue worship service. Here he is
shown lighting a candle for the Menorah.
"I adjure all the people in Cyprus who are true children of the Orthodox Church to
flee as fast as their feet can carry them from those priests who have fallen and
submitted to the Latins; neither assemble in church with them, nor receive any
blessing from their hands. For it is better for you to pray to God in your homes
alone than to gather together in churches with the Latin-minded."
- St. Germanos II, Patriarch of Constantinople, PG 140:620a
"'But if,' they say, 'we had devised some middle ground
[compromise] between the dogmas [of the Papists and the Orthodox], then thanks
to this we would have united with them and accomplished our business superbly,
without at all having been forced to say anything except what corresponds to
custom and has been handed down [by the Fathers].' This is precisely the means
by which many, from of old, have been deceived and persuaded to follow those who
have led them off the steep precipice of impiety; believing that there is some
middle ground between the two teachings that can reconcile obvious
contradictions, they have been exposed to peril."

(Orthodox Word, March-April-May, 1967)

I. THE TEACHING OF THE SCRIPTURES, CHURCH FATHERS, AND ECUMENICAL COUNCILS ON THE ABSENCE OF SALVATION AMONG HERETICS AND THOSE IN COMMUNION WITH THEM.
HERESY
"We know that salvation itself is a property of the One Church, and that no one can
be outside of the catholic Church and yet share the Faith of Christ, or be
saved...Neither do we offer any part of that hope to the ungodly heretics, but
we place them entirely outside of that hope; indeed, they have not the least
participation in Christ, but vainly assume for themselves that saving Name."
-St. John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople (4th Century AD)
[Migne P. G. 59:725]
"Another thing the blessed
man taught and insisted upon with all was never on any occasion whatsoever to
associate with heretics and, above all, never to take the Holy Communion with
them, 'even if', the blessed man said, 'you remain without communicating all
your life, if through stress of circumstances you cannot find a community of the
catholic Church. For if, having legally married a wife in this world of the
flesh, we are forbidden by God and by the laws to desert her and be united to
another woman, even though we have to spend a long time separated from her in a
distant country, and shall incur punishment if we violate our vows, how then
shall we, who have been joined to God through the Orthodox faith and the catholic
Church -- as the apostle says: 'I espoused you to one husband that I might
present you as a pure virgin to Christ' (2 Cor. 11:2) -- how shall we
escape from sharing in that punishment which in the world to come awaits
heretics, if we defile the orthodox and holy faith by adulterous communion with
heretics?'
"For 'communion', he said, 'has
been so called because he who has 'communion' has things in common and
agrees with those with whom he has 'communion'. Therefore I implore
you earnestly, children, never to go near the oratories of the heretics in order
to communicate there.'"

PATRIARCHATE OF CONSTANTINOPLE
"We are deceived and we sin, if we
think that the Orthodox faith came down from Heaven and that all [other] creeds
are unworthy. Three hundred million people have chosen Islam in order to reach
their god, and other hundreds of millions are Protestants, Catholics, and
Buddhists. The goal of every religion is to improve mankind."

PATRIARCHATE OF ANTIOCH
"...But the Spirit blows
where the Spirit wills and holiness in the sense of enlightenment and
glorification can be received by all people everywhere.... Dialogue for truth
can be established. Christian adherence to Christ as the truth should not
obscure the truths scattered in the religious traditions surrounding them. All
these truths spring from the same Divine source. We should welcome all spiritual
life-giving nourishment, not as a human word but as bread from Heaven. All
discourse resists different discourse, and all scriptures resist different
scriptures. That is why the aim of dialogue is above all, by going beyond
religious traditions, to seek the Divine truth latent beneath different words
and symbols. That is not to relativize the Christian message: it is not
syncretism, it is the same Christ we worship as he journeys through the infinite
spaces of other religions. This requires us to have a kenotic [sic] attitude.
Kenosis [sic] is witness without words and can be fruitful. In dialogue the
Church opens up, goes deeper and comes to know itself...."

PATRIARCHATE OF ALEXANDRIA
"The prophet Mohammed is an apostle. He is a man of God, who worked for the Kingdom
of God and created Islam, a religion to which belong one billion people. ...Our God is the Father of all men, even of the Moslems and Buddhists. I believe that God loves the Moslems and the Buddhists...When I speak against Islam or
Buddhism, then I am not found in agreement with God. ...My God is the God of
other men also. He is not only God for the Orthodox. This is my
position."

PATRIARCHATE OF JERUSALEM
"God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us...
Oriental Orthodox [Monophysite], Orthodox, Catholic, and Evangelical...
We renew our commitment to strive to be [the] One Holy Catholic and
Apostolic Church, according to the will of the Lord Jesus, 'so that they may
be one' (John 17:11)... by opening our hearts and minds to the guidance of the
Holy Spirit, so that we encounter each other cooperatively, with respect, and
with kindness. In Him, we are one."

Although the Moscow Patriarchate had not ever published any Orthodox catechism for wide
distribution, this did not prevent one of her chief hierarchs from declaring:
"When I have my own printing press, I will publish the Koran according to the most

will give it to Soviet Mohammedans."

THE ECUMENISTS BELONG OR SUPPORT
THE WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES

Opening Worship Ceremony, 7th WCC Assembly in Canberra, Australia, 1992
"In the end, the great religious communities will not disappear. No one will have
the upper-hand. Jews will remain Jews; Muslims will remain Muslims; and those
belonging to the great Oriental religions will remain Hindus, Buddhists, and
Taoists. Africa will express its own view of the world; China will retain her
heritage. As before, people will continue to travel from the East to the West,
from the North to the South, and abide in the Kingdom of God without, in
consequence, having first become Christians like us."

THE PARLIAMENT OF THE WORLD'S RELIGIONS
"I am a Trappist monk, that
is, a Catholic monastic. And I belong to a group called Monastic Interreligious
Dialogue under the direction of Rome for dialogue with the eastern religions,
especially Buddhism, which has a monastic core to it...To be here participating
at the World Parliament of Religions is very much a part of what we do... It's a
thrill to be here, meeting people, sharing with those from other religions,
helping to break down some of the walls of misunderstanding or confusion that
exist between us. When we come together and share like this, then we come to
understand that we have the same experience at our deepest levels. And when we
come to understand this, then everything else seems to be just
details."

U.N. MILLENNIUM PEACE SUMMIT
"The goal of the International Advisory Council of Religious and Spiritual Leaders is
to enhance and strengthen the work of the United Nations...[through]
an International Advisory Council of Religious and Spiritual Leaders that is
designed to serve as an ongoing interfaith ally to the U.N. in its quest for
peace, global understanding and international cooperation...What
we need to engage in is an education factor of the different religious
traditions and the different theologies and philosophies and practices. That
would give us a better understanding, and then I think [we have to deal with]
the claims of absolute truth -- we will recognize there is not just one claim
of absolute truth, but there is truth in every tradition. That is happening more
and more when you have gatherings such as these."

FREEMASONRY
"Man is a god in the making, and as in the mystic myths of Egypt, on the potter's wheel he is being
molded. When his light shines out to lift and preserve all things, he receives
the triple crown of god-hood and joins that throng of Master Masons who, their
robes of Blue and Gold, are seeking to dispel the darkness of night with the
triple light of the Masonic Lodge...The
glorious privileges of a Master Mason are in keeping with his greater knowledge
and wisdom...For him the Heavens have opened and the Great Light has bathed him
in its radiance. The Prodigal Son, so long a wanderer in the regions of
darkness, has returned to his Father's house...The voice speaks from the Heavens, its power
thrilling the Master until his own being seems filled with its divinity, saying,
'This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.' He [The Master Mason],
in truth has become the spokesman of the Most High. He stands between the
glowing fire light and the world. Through him passes Hydra, the great snake, and
from its mouth there pours to man the light of God."
